Presidential Inauguration: The Mormon Tabernacle Choir is Setting the Right Example.

(Mormon Sense) The Mormon Tabernacle Choir is being criticized by several prominent voices in response to the announcement that it will sing at the US Presidential inauguration on January 20, 2017.  Yesterday, attorney Raul A. Reyes, who is a member of the USA Today board of contributors as well as a contributor to CNN, wrote an opinion piece entitled, “The Mormon Tabernacle Choir’s Trump-sized mistake.”  The criticism by Mr. Reyes, and individuals like former choir member Jan Chamberlin (who recently announced her resignation over the issue), is understandable, but misguided.  It also reflects a shallow and problematic temperament in...

ACTION ALERT: Gabriel Joseph Sentencing

LIBERTY REEF (FCP) May 13, 2016 (Updated 5/25/2016) – I have never before done this, and I’m unclear just how much influence I can muster on this, but I’m asking that my friends and the supporters of the Free Capitalist Project will take a few minutes and read this alert – in its entirety – and put aside any excuse, to act in support of Gabriel Joseph. LIBERTY REEF (FCP) May 8, 2016 – So-called political liberals aren’t usually the sharpest tool in the shed, and despite their mantra of “tolerance” are often some of the most intellectually and emotionally intolerant public voices in modern social life. In this context, during the Oregon, Malheur protest and occupation, back in January I came across a few social media postings with liberals condemning the protesters, and those expressing outrage and sympathy over the shooting death of LaVoy Finicum, with statements like, “Do you know what would happen if those guys had been black?” The implication being that somehow...

Armed Militants? What Does the Law Say?

LIBERTY REEF (FCP) March 28, 2016 – Okay. Serious question. The folks who “occupied” the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge are regularly referred to in media accounts as “armed militants” or as an “armed militia.” Yet, not one of these “protesters” ever used a weapon during the whole ordeal.  In fact, even when LaVoy Finicum’s truck was first fired at, Ryan Payne (one of the alleged militia leaders) got out of the truck peacefully and surrendered without incident. At the shootout, where LaVoy was ultimately killed, despite being fired upon repeatedly none of the “protesters” ever handled a weapon. I know there...

The Case of Keith Wood: Is Informing Potential Jurors of Their Rights – A Crime?

BIG RAPIDS (FCP) -Back in November 2015, Keith Wood stood on a public sidewalk in front of a county courthouse in Michigan. Wood, a former pastor and businessman had been sharing information in a pamphlet he obtained from a federally recognized (501(c)(3)) non-profit educational organization. The pamphlet informed citizens of their legal authority and power as jurors. For this, a local magistrate, a county judge, and a local prosecutor orchestrated efforts to stop Wood, and he was arrested and charged with accused of obstruction of justice for handing out the fliers. This past Wednesday, Mecosta Circuit Judge Kimberly Booher...
